GIFF Film Review – Laroy, Texas (2024)

My film review of Laroy, Texas (2024) that premiered at the Gasparilla International Film Festival this year in the state of Florida. A great dark comedy for any fan of a comedy, western, crime genre hybrid that feels reminiscent of the Coen Brothers. Directed by Shane Atkinson. Starring: John Magaro, Steve Zahn and Dylan Baker. Synopsis: Ray (John Magaro) works at a hardware store that he and his brother Junior (Matthew Del Negro) had developed as partners. But, Ray soon starts to learn the truth that his wife, Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson) is having an affair. Just when Ray is about to commit suicide, he ends up being mistaken as a hit-man. And that is when his life turns upside down. Ray ends up taking down a lawyer as part of his new job as a hit-man and now the case is wide out in the open. Ray and his friend Skip (Steve Zahn) end up trying to solve this case with frenetic and offbeat results.

It is a film that I highly recommend that is both a great genre hybrid and a great character study that I believe could go far in great places.
